MAC Fall 2022 Symposium

Note: Day events at Indiana State Library (315 West Ohio Street) in the History Reference Room, evening event locations will be provided onsite.

Thursday, October 13, 2022 (optional)

The Society of Indiana Archivists will host an informal networking event for its members and Symposium attendees from 5:00-8:00pm EST at The Garage Food Hall located in the Bottleworks District. No registration is required. Attendees will be responsible for transportation and purchasing their drinks/food. 8:30am-9:00am: Check-in/Continental Breakfast (catered by Illinois Street Food Emporium)

9:00am-9:30am Opening Remarks, Introductions

9:30am-11:00am Assessing the Need for Outreach

• Learn about the differences between inreach and outreach and the various factors that can influence the success or failure of your program (i.e. institutional goals, resources, collaborators, etc.)

• Pre-assessment tool overview (includes mapping your outreach goals to your institutional mission and identifying audiences and available resources). Participants will then apply the tool to their own goals in small groups

11:00am-12:00pm Modes of Inreach and Outreach

• Presenters will share examples of successful inreach (e.g. programming such as tours, training sessions, and communication within our organizations) and outreach (exhibits, social media, instruction, lectures, events, etc. to those outside our organization) from both their home institutions and the MAC region as a whole.

12:00pm-1:00pm: Lunch (catered by Illinois Street Food Emporium)

1:00pm-3:00pm: Outreach Unconference (snack break included) 

• Break into groups to discuss the outreach topics that are on your mind with presenters and fellow attendees. Specific topics will be determined by workshop participants via a suggestion and voting process in advance. Bring three real-world outreach-related issues you'd like to discuss. We'll break into groups based on topic.

3:00pm-4:00pm: Small group activity - Workshop a new inreach or outreach activity for your repository amongst a group of peers.

4:00pm: Adjourn

Homework - Prepare one slide to share one new inreach or outreach idea with your peers on Saturday morning.

10:30am-11:30am: Outreach in practice

• Planning for outreach and sustainability, and creating a one-year Outreach plan (includes individual and small group work)

• Introduction to tools to take home (from workbook) - Project management strategies, publicity checklists, post-event assessment templates, etc.

• Tips and tricks to sustain outreach in the easiest ways possible

11:30am-12:00pm: Wrap-up and Questions

12:00pm: Adjourn

Family Caregiving

As an organization, MAC seeks to create a conference environment that is welcoming to all members. This includes those with caregiving responsibilities. MAC wants members to know that they are welcome to bring children to Symposium events, including meeting sessions, tours, and breaks. Parents are welcome to feed their children anywhere, at any time during the conference. Harassment of parents feeding their children, including requests to move or cover up, violates state law and will not be tolerated. MAC will provide designated lactation spaces as well.

At this time, there are no mask mandates in Marion County. Attendees to the Symposium are encouraged but not required to wear masks. About the Presenters

Carey (Beam) Champion
Director, Wylie House Museum | Associate
Librarian, Wylie House Education Center

Carey Champion is the Director of Indiana University Libraries’ Wylie House Museum and Morton C. Bradley, Jr. Education Center. She facilitates the use of the 19th century house museum’s archival and object collections for historical interpretation, teaching/learning, and a wide variety of outreach programs. She earned both her MLS and her BA in Sociology from Indiana University. 

Carrie Schwier
Outreach and Public Services Archivist, Associate Librarian
Indiana University Libraries, University Archives

Carrie Schwier is the outreach and public services archivist at the IU Libraries University Archives, where she collaborates with teaching faculty to design and implement primary source–based instruction sessions and assignments, oversees departmental access services, and coordinates a wide range of outreach programming. She previously worked as the assistant archivist at the same repository and as a curatorial assistant in the works on paper department of the Eskenazi Museum of Art. Carrie presents and writes on primary source literacy, library and archives outreach initiatives, and University history. She holds an M.L.S. and M.A. from Indiana University and a B.A. from Hanover College. 

Carol Street
Undergraduate Research Archivist
University of Kentucky, Special Collections Research Center, Margaret I. King Library

Carol Street is the Undergraduate Research Archivist at the University of Kentucky Libraries. She mentors undergraduates in the UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center’s Learning Lab, which encourages students to discover archives and archival research through an intensive, one-year internship. Carol’s research interests include student engagement and mentoring, outreach, and architectural records. She holds a MLS, BA, and certificate in Museum Studies from Indiana University.
