Subject :From Fonds to Item and Back Again: Problems and Successes in the Processing Project

Our panel discussed processing projects we’ve participated in, specific challenges we’ve faced, and how we’ve managed these problems to best suit our institution. The style of presentation we chose for this is Pecha Kucha, which allows for each presenter to show 20 slides and speak for 20 seconds per slide. Kara Evans, an archivist in the Missouri Valley Special Collections at the Kansas City, Missouri Public spoke about challenges she faced when processing a large, oversize, and completely unarranged collection of materials from the Kansas City Stockyards. Kate Hill, the lead archivist in the Missouri Valley Special Collections at the Kansas City, Missouri Public Library discussed some of the processing activities and challenges she typically deals with on a daily and weekly basis. Volodymyr Chumachenko, processing archivist at Kansas State University’s Archives and Special Collections spoke about working with personal papers and finding context within the library’s mission. Meagan Kellom, an archival collections cataloger at Minnesota Historical Society spoke about processing for a large grant funded project using MPLP. Gino Pasi, a collections manager for the Special Collections and Archives at Wright State University Libraries discussed working with a collection that is being re-processed after having been previously processed by volunteers. Jennifer Howard, a librarian in the Martin F. Schmidt Research Library at the Kentucky Historical Society spoke about changes being made in cataloging practices to improve online access to archival collections.
